Psychology

Psychology has captured the imagination of many people today. It has been portrayed in movies and television shows and therapy has become a familiar theme that people talk about and many actually participate in. This study of the human mind and behavior has made its way into the mainstream of society, and many people talk openly about psychological issues and therapeutic solutions. In fact, many people are much more open about seeking psychological help and there is not as much of a stigma attached to it as there was years ago. People have become not just more open minded, but really receptive to the idea of psychology.

Because we live in a media-saturated society, psychology has gotten a lot of scrutiny and people know a lot more about psychological disorders than they did even ten years ago. Depression is now a commonly treated ailment where 20 years ago it was rarely discussed. Now we see television commercials for antidepressants and people are encouraged to seek out help if they have depression or other psychological disorders. Talk shows focus on psychological issues and people are now facing interventions on live television to get help with psychological disorders. While a lot of this is for entertainment value, it has opened up people's minds to the field of psychology and the potential for good that it can bring to society.

In an age where people are more educated about mental disorders and substance abuse, psychology is becoming a common part of everyday life. On television and at the workplace we see people who struggle with depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse and anxiety. Many companies have set up employee assistance programs where employees can get help and referrals to psychologists, therapists, and treatment programs for a variety of psychological and emotional disorders. Where once it was taboo to talk about it in the workplace, employers have realized that psychological and emotional disorders can affect productivity and the workplace environment and investing in good mental health resources for employees is money well spent.

Psychology has experienced a renewed interest as more people want to study it and more people consult psychologists on a whole host of issues. As it makes it way out of the private confines of the therapist's office and into the public awareness, it is truly creating a healthy dialogue on the emotional and mental health of today's society. It has earned a position or trust and respect in society today and more and more people benefit from that as a result.
